Built in the year 1000, the impressive Foix castle is perched on a rocky outcrop dominating the town. Here that awaits you characters straight out of the Middle Ages, ready to show you how to fire a crossbow, forge a weapon, carve stone and how they defended themselves with enormous trebuchets. In the afternoon we leave for the ‘pog’ of Montsegur, a mythic place and the heart of the Cathar resistance to the crusades, mounted against them by the Pope and the king of France. In this venerated place, known for its epic siege which ended in a terrible bonfire of ‘heretics’, you will climb steeply up to find the ruins of the royal castle and the Cathar village. 360° breathtaking views over the mountains and valleys - worth the climb for sure.
